Police charge 2 in connection with Seton Hall shooting

EAST ORANGE - Authorities have charged two men in the shooting that killed one and left four wounded near Seton Hall University.

The Essex County Prosecutor's Office announced yesterday in a late-night news conference that they arrested 25-year-old Nicholas Welch at his home in connection to the shooting. Authorities also charged 19-year-old Marcus Bascus, who they said may have provided the gun to Welch.

Both are charged with murder, conspiracy and weapons offenses, according to the Essex County Prosecutor's Office. Welch is being held on $2 million bail at the Essex County Jail. Bascus remains at large.

Jessica Moore, a 19-year-old Seton Hall sophomore, was shot at the off-campus party on South Clinton Street. She died Saturday afternoon.

Police say Welch was denied entry to the party, then returned later with a gun and opened fire.

Welch lived just a few doors down from where the party was held and neighbors describe him as a family man. They expressed their shock over the incident when they spoke to News 12 New Jersey.
