Police ask for vigilance in disappearing manhole covers

ELMWOOD PARK - Elmwood Park police are asking residents to be vigilant of disappearing manhole covers.

According to authorities, thieves have been making off with the covers, likely trying to make fast cash. They say the covers weigh about 100 pounds each, which could equal close to $25 for each stolen piece.

Police say a missing manhole cover was first noticed on Elmwood Drive on Tuesday. A few days earlier, two men were also spotted taking a sewer drain on Edward Ross Drive, but the witness assumed the men worked for the town and didn't immediately report it.
