PLAINFIELD - Police in Plainfield say a 5-year-old boy was struck by a stray bullet this afternoon.

The child was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, where he remains in serious condition.

Gunshots rang out at around 3:50 p.m. near Plainfield Avenue and South Second Street. According to police, the boy was not the intended target.

A family friend says the boy was on his way home from school when he was shot. Police tell News 12 New Jersey that the boy's mother was on the scene when they arrived.
