Police: 3 murders in 9 hours in Newark

NEWARK - Newark residents say they want their laid off police officers back on the streets after a slew of murders.

Three killings took place in Brick City over the course of nine hours, police say.

One man was shot on East Runyan Street, another unidentified person was stabbed to death on 6th Avenue, and Rowland Smith was shot and killed on Lenark Avenue. Police say the stabbing was a domestic incident.

The murders come one week after 167 police officers turned in their guns and badges due to budget cuts. Police say the murders and the layoffs are coincidental.
