Police: 2 men attempt to carjack off-duty police officer in Newark

NEWARK - Police say two men attempted to carjack an off-duty police officer this morning in Newark, leaving one suspect injured and the other on the run.

Officials say the two men tried to carjack the off-duty officer at around 5 a.m. outside the Hot Spot Diner on Avenue A. They say one of the suspects pulled out a gun and demanded the car, leading the off-duty officer to draw his gun and shoot the man.

Officials say the two suspects fled and attempted to make a getaway in a different car, but crashed their vehicle several blocks away.

The suspect who was shot was taken to the hospital. Police are still searching for the second suspect.
