Police: 17 shot in Newark this week

NEWARK - Some in Newark say they think the Brick City is starting to feel like a combat zone after 17 people were shot in the last five days, two of them fatally.

In comparison, the Department of Defense says that three people were killed this week in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The latest shooting was Friday evening at round 6:30 p.m. on Netherwood Place. On Thursday night, four people were shot, one fatally in a drive-by shooting in Newark's West Ward. Officials say Al-Tariq Harris, 21, was killed after being shot in the face while standing outside a convenience store on South 18th Street.

Two of the victims of that shooting are in stable condition at an area hospital, while one was treated and released, according to police.

On Monday, a total of 12 people were shot, including one fatally, in two separate shootings. The next day, Mayor Cory Booker chalked those shootings up to be a turf war between two rival gangs.
