PATERSON -  Authorities are investigating a dog attack that has left one boy dead and another injured.

The Passaic County Sheriff's Office says a 115-pound bull mastiff got loose from a home in Paterson and attacked two teen boys. Investigators say one of the boys was able to get away while the other, 13-year-old Kenneth Santilla, died from his injuries. His body was found about eight hours later, in a wooded area close to where the dog lived.

Police say Paul Clarke, the dog's owner, tried to intervene, stabbing the dog several times during the attack.

Maria Cachus says she watched the police search the area from her bedroom window. She says the injured boy yelled up to her and told her what happened. She says she also later heard cries from the victim's family once they found out he was dead.

The medical examiner will perform an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of the boy's death.

The dog was put down by animal control. A necropsy will be performed on the dog to determine whether or not the dog had any commutable diseases.

The owners of the dog are being interviewed by police to determine what happened. There have been no formal charges filed as of yet. The  dog was not owned by the victim's family.
