NEWARK - One person is dead after an early morning car accident on the New Jersey Turnpike in Newark.

Police say the accident happened at around 5 a.m. on the southbound side of the turnpike near exit 14. The victim died when he stepped out of his vehicle and was hit by a tractor-trailer.

Police say there were several other accidents on that same stretch of highway due to icy conditions. Salt trucks were called in to treat the roads.

All lanes are open in the area, but police are advising drivers to be careful, as roads are slippery from yesterday's storm.
