MANALAPAN - The New Jersey Forest Fire Service is conducting planned burns at Monmouth Battlefield State Park today.

The forest fire service says the prescribed burning of grass fields at the park is necessary to reduce hazardous accumulations of forest fuels. The burns also prevent forest fires from spreading, and reduce their intensity.

Those living in nearby areas may see or smell smoke fill the skies.

The planned burns are scheduled to take place until March 15.
