PLAINFIELD - Police are searching for a suspect who shot a 5-year-old boy with a stray bullet yesterday afternoon.

Police say Jasir Gibson is able to speak and is responding to doctors. But a relative tells News 12 New Jersey that the bullet is lodged in his vertebrae and that the child will have to undergo surgery to remove it.

Jasir and his mother, Shenta Ford, were walking to their apartment complex along Plainfield Avenue yesterday afternoon when police say a man walked toward them with a gun and started firing.

It's unclear who the man was shooting at, but police do not believe that Jasir was the intended target.

Police are handing out fliers and asking for help in identifying the shooter. Police are also looking for the driver of a Nissan who was seen speeding away from the area down South Second Street.

The alleged shooter is still on the loose.
