PARSIPPANY - A Morris Plains police officer has adopted a pit bull that was left tied to a fence in the cold.

Officer Nicholas Grawehr adopted the dog Wednesday after it was found abandoned outside last month. The dog was found by Grawehr’s friend, Parsippany Police Officer J. Williams.

Officer Williams found the pit bull on Jan. 18 outside the Parsippany Animal Control and Shelter building. Someone had tied the dog to a fence with a red leash. The unknown owner reportedly left a dog toy, a bag of food and two bowls outside. The water in one of the bowls was frozen as temperatures at the time were about 23 degrees.

Officer Williams kept the dog in the back of his patrol car until animal control officers arrived. When Officer Grawehr heard that the dog was up for adoption, he volunteered to take the dog home to his family.

The pit bull’s original owner is not known at this time.

Parsippany police also say that a second pit bull, not associated with the dog found outside, is also up for adoption. Anyone who is interested should contact the Parsippany Animal Control and Shelter at 973-263-7083.
