PISCATAWAY - A major roadway has been deemed unsafe to drive on after being bombarded by winter weather and utility work.
Piscataway Mayor Brian Wahler has closed Metlars Lane from South Randolphville to South Washington in both directions, and South Washington southbound from Centennial Avenue to Metlars Lane, because of public safety concerns.
Wahler says there were open trenches dug up by utility crews in addition to weather-related potholes. Crews were on the roadway Thursday to try and repair the trouble areas.

The mayor says he consulted with the Middlesex County Engineering Department before making the decision.
City officials say the utility work is related to the expansion of Metlars Lane to Stelton Road, but it's a county project that apparently is behind schedule.
Wahler says it is a decision he wasn't happy about, but drivers were at risk. "We're getting a lot of calls about this," he says. "It's about the legal liability." The mayor says he hopes to reopen the roadway by the weekend.
