Pink slips sent to Newark police officers

Barring a court order, 167 Newark police officers will be let go one week from Friday as they have started to receive their pink slips

NEWARK - Barring a court order, 167 Newark police officers will be let go one week from Friday as they have started to receive their pink slips in the mail.

Lamar Melvin, who received a pink slip, was a part of the Newark Police Department's graduating class in Jan. 2008. He says when he graduated people told him how great the job was and there were great opportunities. The Newark Fraternal Order of Police sued the city, claiming the city never held a formal meeting with the union before going ahead with the layoffs.
