Perth Amboy apartment building to be demolished after blaze

PERTH AMBOY - (AP) - Officials have ordered a northern New Jersey apartment complex building demolished after a four-alarm fire left 100 people homeless.

A structural engineer's report is expected Tuesday, which will determine if residents can get their belongings from Building 15 at the Harbortown Terrace complex in Perth Amboy.

Officials say most tenants in the 31 occupied apartments have moved in with friends or family.

Fire Chief David Volk tells The Home News Tribune of East Brunswick Sunday's fire is believed to have started in an outside courtyard between the H-shaped building. The cause is under investigation.
