PEQUANNOCK - City managers in Pequannock are giving shoppers an incentive to spend locally - saving on their property tax bills.
Stickers and signs encouraging customers to "Pick Pequannock" are popping up all over the Morris County town and let shoppers know which businesses are part of the program.
The savings come in the form of a property tax rebate up to 15 percent of the purchase price at businesses like Grooming by Jacki. "It's making the town more involved with our stores," says owner Jacki Romaine.
Not all businesses are on board with the program, since each business absorbs the cost of the rebate.
Shoppers like Colleen Glynn are concerned. "I think it's actually hurting the small businesses in town in a way, so that kind of is upsetting to me," she says. "So I don't know how much I'll use it in the future."
Some businesses say it's too expensive for them to participate and they worry the savings wouldn't be enough to bring in any new customers.
Thirty businesses in Pequannock are offering this discount to residents.
