EDISON - Starting today, consumers paying with a credit card could pay additional fees on purchases.

A change in the law allows retailers to tack on surcharges up to 4 percent to credit card purchases. This enables merchants to cover the cost credit card companies charge them in processing fees.

Most retailers say they are not expecting to charge the fee for risk of losing customers.

The surcharge does not apply to debit cards, and it is at the discretion of the retailer.
