SECAUCUS - Over two dozen North Jersey families will be getting an extra special holiday surprise thanks to a nonprofit organization.

The group Pay Away the Layaway surprised 30 families by paying off their layaway balances at Burlington Coat Factory in Secaucus.

Two New York Jets players, Lorenzo Mauldin and Kenbrell Thompkins, met with some of the families Wednesday, along with members of Pay Away the Layaway.

"Many families struggle to pay off the final payments of their layaway balances which means that some kids might not get gifts under the tree,” says founder Lee Karchawer. “We want to make sure that we can step in and help those families during that time."

Pay Away the Layaway has paid off families’ debts in more than a dozen cities around the country.
