NEWARK - Residents of Pavilion Apartments in Newark argued that they are already paying enough, and their rent shouldn't see an increase. At a rent control meeting, they were able to push back a motion to charge them more.
The proposed rent increases are due to municipal taxes. Landlords let tenants know they would be lobbying the city's rent control board for hikes. Hundreds of tenants also lobbied, which made the board decide that it needed information and more time to make a decision.
The rent control board pushed the hearing on the surcharge to Jan. 1.
