JERSEY CITY - The Port Authority has announced weekend closures at Exchange Place that could cause delays for PATH riders for almost a year.

The agency says work to comply with a federal deadline to implement new safety equipment will begin next weekend, and could last up to 45 weeks.

The upgrade will include signal technology that will automatically apply the train's brakes if a collision appears imminent.

That means weekend PATH riders will have a much longer trip between Newark and Manhattan. Passengers will board at Newark or Harrison, transfer at Journal Square, then take the PATH to Hoboken before heading on the line to 33rd Street.

There will be no service to Exchange Place or World Trade Center stations until they reopen each Monday morning at 4:45 a.m.
