Paterson police beefing up patrols for Halloween

PATERSON - Halloween and Mischief Night are this weekend and many police departments are beefing up patrols in preparation.

Some departments, such as the Paterson Police Department, are also gearing up for a weekend they say is popular for gang initiations.

Other officials say the gang-initiation rumor is just that, a rumor and urban legend.

According to state police, there are 148 distinct gangs and 16,000 members in New Jersey.

State police say New Jersey has not seen any increase in violent crimes during the week of Halloween in recent years.
