PATERSON - The mayor of Paterson and three public works employees were offered plea deals in their corruption cases.

Mayor Joey Torres and the three public works supervisors were formally arraigned Monday on charges that they allegedly used city workers to perform work on a building owned by Torres’ relatives and then paid those workers with taxpayer money.

Torres’ plea deal would require the mayor to spend five years in prison, pay restitution and resign from office.

The three supervisors’ deals would require them to pay restitution and resign from their jobs. They would also be barred from working in the public sector again. They would not face any jail time under their deals.

Torres and the three supervisors have until Sept. 1 to decide if they will take the deals or the cases will go to trial.

All four men pleaded not guilty at the arraignment hearing.

Torres has maintained his innocence in the case and has so far refused multiple calls from other city leaders and the public to resign.
