PATERSON - Paterson Mayor Jose “Joey” Torres has not yet surrendered to police, one day after he was indicted on corruption charges.

Officials say that there is no hard deadline when it comes to surrendering for these types of charges, so Torres may not surrender to New Jersey State Police until the end of the week.

The mayor and three of his Department of Public Works supervisors were charged after the mayor allegedly used the supervisors to do work on a building leased by Torres’s daughter and nephew. The attorney general alleges that the supervisors were paid with city money and in overtime.

Two of the supervisors surrendered Tuesday.

The third, Joseph Mania, surrendered Wednesday. The Record Newspaper reports that Mania was the highest overtime earner in 2015, making more than $73,000 on top of his base salary.

"My client has now been fingerprinted and photographed, basically released without detention,” says Mania’s attorney Ray Flood. “We look forward to going to court.”

Flood says that his client will plead not guilty to the charges.

Officials say that the case will be handled in Bergen County courts instead of Paterson’s Passaic County courts. Officials say this is typical when it involves high-profile cases and well-known figures.

A court date has not been set for the case.
