PATERSON - Paterson Mayor Joey Torres avoided questions about an FBI investigation into this office during a special City Council meeting held Wednesday.

The FBI confirms that they were at Paterson City Hall Tuesday as part of an investigation.

The Paterson City Council held a special meeting about economic development Wednesday, and Mayor Torres refused to comment when News 12 New Jersey asked about the investigation.

Paterson officials addressed several economic topics at the meeting, from new policing strategies to millions poured into paving roads, redeveloping property and other infrastructure.

Some City Council members did address the FBI investigation.

“People want answers, the same way we want answers,” says council member Luis Velez. “We want to wait for an investigation to be completed. We urge the necessary agencies to expedite and to move forward so we can move forward.”

The mayor was able to highlight several positive points for Paterson at the meeting. Public Safety Director Jerry Speziale says that crime in Paterson was at a 30-year low, with a 15 percent decrease in overall crime since 2014.

Wednesday’s meeting was quieter than several previous City Council meeting which often devolved into shouting matches and calls for Mayor Torres to resign.
