Paterson Mayor Jose 'Joey' Torres expected to surrender in corruption case

PATERSON - Paterson Mayor Jose 'Joey' Torres and three supervisors in the Paterson Department of Public Works have been charged in a corruption case.

Torres and three supervisors in the Paterson Department of Public Works have been charged with official misconduct, conspiracy, theft, tampering with records and falsifying records. The supervisors charged are Joseph Mania, 51, Imad Mowaswes, 52, and Tim Hanlon, 30. Two of the men surrendered to state police but did not comment on the case.

According to Attorney General Christopher Porrino, the mayor requested the supervisors use DPW employees to do work on a warehouse leased by his daughter and nephew. Porrino says the employees performed carpentry, painting and wiring work at the warehouse. In addition, he says the employees were paid by the city and received overtime.

"This is a case of old school public corruption and abuse of power," says Porrino. "Mayor Torres allegedly treated city workers like they were his personal handymen and treated taxpayers dollars like they were his own."

Paterson Councilman Luis Velez says it's a sad day for Paterson. He says the council may have to look at a vote of no-confidence in the mayor.

In response to the allegations, Mayor Torres released a statement saying that he was extremely disappointed and surprised that the attorney general had elected to pursue this case and file charges.
