PATERSON - Paterson's fire department will be beefing up its manpower thanks to a $7 million federal grant.

Rep. Bill Pascrell (D-9th District) helped secure the federal funding. The grant will allow the department to retain 40 firefighters whose jobs were in jeopardy due to budget cuts. The department can also add 9 new firefighters to its ranks.

The grant is part of the SAFER act, an acronym for "Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response."

The money will fund the 49 positions for two years.
