PATERSON - City leaders are considering raising cab fares in Paterson for the first time in 20 years.

Currently, it costs $3 for the first mile and 20 cents for each additional eighth of a mile.

There is also a 50 cent surcharge for each passenger after three.

While there is no set rate for the fare hike, drivers say it's long overdue.

"We need it to pay rent, for the kids," says driver Lion Javier Guzman. "Everything is going up."

Paterson City Council members are considering several fare hike options, including pricing based on geography or a flat fee.
