PATERSON - Barbershops in Paterson may soon be forced to close earlier.

The city says the police department receives a lot of complaints at late hours about the shops. The concerns include noise, as well as reports that the shops are selling and serving alcohol, and possibly dealing drugs.

The Paterson City Council is considering a curfew as early as 11 p.m.

"All we're saying is if you open at 7 a.m., there's no need for you to close at 3 a.m. or 2 a.m.," says Council President Andrew Sayegh. "Who gets a haircut at 2 a.m.?"

Sayegh says the council is willing to be flexible with extended hours for holidays and other occasions.
