Passaic sheriff race honors tradition of unconventional politics

WAYNE - Passaic County politics have been historically unconventional and this year's race for sheriff honors that tradition.

Passaic's former undersheriff, Felix Garcia, is running as the Republican candidate in the race. He is running against Clifton Police Detective Lt. Richard Berdnick, who is the Democratic candidate.

Lt. Berdnick was a late substitution for the Democrats after former Sheriff Jerry Speziale dropped out of the race in August when he resigned to take the second-in-command job at the Port Authority.

Both candidates agree that the department's budget has ballooned by nearly $20 million over the past eight years.
