ELIZABETH - Parishioners of the Saint Mary of the Assumption Church in Elizabeth are protesting the firing of all four of their parish priests, including the pastor.
About a dozen worshippers gathered in protest in front of the Newark Diocese office this morning. Protesters told News 12 New Jersey that they're angry with the Archbishop for reassigning the church leaders, including their disabled pastor, without informing the congregation.
Many say the decision to move the priests around the Christmas holidays was especially disrespectful.
According to a diocese spokesperson, the move was necessary because the church isn't doing well financially.
They also added that a temporary priest will start tomorrow, and that there will be no interruption to Sunday Mass schedule.
