JERSEY CITY - Over 100 Jersey City parents braved the cold weather Friday for a chance to sign up their children for a preschool program at the Concordia Learning Center, which is part of St. Joseph’s School for the Blind.

Some of the parents began lining up at 3 a.m. Thursday for what is considered to be one of the better schools in Jersey City. It is a private school affiliated with the Jersey City school district.

Parents tell News 12 New Jersey that word-of-mouth and free tuition make the wait worth it.

“It’s an amazing school, everybody raves about it,” says parent Jessica Price. “It’s one of the only free pre-K programs in the area.”

Many parents said they were willing to wait overnight Friday into Saturday when temperatures were expected to drop into the teens. That’s when school officials began handing out numbers.

The director did have to break the bad news to some of the parents in the back of the line that there were only about 93 spots in the school for over 100 families in line.

“Comments that a lot of parents have made to me over the years is that they’ve waited in line for concert tickets, they’ve waited in lone for iPhones, why wouldn’t they wait in line for their child’s education?” says school director Migdalia Viole.

The families will not have to wait in line overnight, but they will need to be back at 8 a.m. Saturday for the actual registration.
