HACKENSACK - The Bergen County Prosecutor's Office says a Paramus police officer is listed in critical but stable condition at Hackensack Medical Center after she was shot in the abdomen multiple times last night.

The prosecutor said in a news release this morning that officer Rachel Morgan, a two-year veteran of the force, was shot at around 11 p.m. after pursuing a male suspect driving south on Route 17 in Paramus. Morgan was struck just below her bulletproof vest.

Authorities say the suspect, Michael Carmody, 23, of Westwood, got on the Garden State Parkway and later lost control of the vehicle. The prosecutor's office says Carmody apparently shot the officer when she got to the scene.

Another officer fired at Carmody, hitting him several times. The 23-year-old was listed in critical condition at St. Joseph Hospital.

The Bergen County Prosecutor's Office and Paramus Police Department say they are still investigating the shooting.
