KEYPORT - An oyster bed that the state says has become a health hazard was pulled from Raritan Bay today.About 50,000 oysters were planted there last fall as part of a research project to see how well they could clean the polluted bay.The Department of Environmental Protection says some of the oysters grew to market size. Officials say it was risky that poachers would steal some of the polluted oysters and sell them to consumers. The baykeeper says it is unlikely anyone could find the oyster bed. The DEP told the baykeeper the oysters could be moved to the Delaware Bay, but the baykeeper said it would just be taking pollutants from one bay to another.Without another location, the oysters will be destroyed, which the DEP says was the last thing it wanted to do.
