NEWARK - An excavator that fell into Newark Bay Thursday morning has been pulled from the water following an accident that killed the operator.
Witnesses say the operator was working near Delancey Street just before 9 a.m. when the rig started slipping and then toppled into the water, quickly sinking into the bay.
"He was just moving rocks, and slipped on the rocks," says Mike Rios. "He tried to hit reverse and it just teeter-tottered, straight into it, straight into the water and then we tried to reach it but we kept getting stuck. It's like quicksand almost."
A few workers say they tried to help the operator get out of the piece of equipment after it fell into the water, but were unsuccessful.
Authorities have not said whether there will be any charges in the incident.
