EDISON - A plan from the state to privatize the lottery system could hurt local lottery retailers.

Small businesses depend on revenue from lotto hopefuls who purchase additional items in the store while buying their tickets.

Under the proposed privatization plan, an independent company would take over the now state-run program and potentially implement Internet sales of lotto tickets. That move could result in a loss of customers and revenue for local lottery retailers.

A lottery spokesperson confirmed to News 12 New Jersey that they are looking for a private firm to run the program and that bids are due by Dec. 11.

According to the spokesperson, a decision has not been made yet on internet sales.
