JERSEY CITY - Officials in Hudson County have completed their investigation into the death of a cop killer.

The Hudson County Prosecutor's Office says that the use of deadly force against Lawrence Campbell was justified in 2014.

Campbell walked into the Walgreens on Kennedy Boulevard a little after 4 a.m. on July 13, 2014 and assaulted the security guard inside. When officers arrived, Campbell ambushed and killed Jersey City Detective Melvin Santiago as he exited his car.

Other officers soon arrived, and Campbell began shooting at them. They returned fire and shot Campbell eight times, including once in the head.

Police found a gun, hunting knife and cocaine on his body.

An autopsy determined that Campbell had alcohol and PCP in his system at the time of the shooting.

The case was reviewed by the Director of the Division Criminal Justice who found that the Hudson County investigation followed the letter of the law.
