Officials: Soldier from Jersey City killed in Afghanistan

JERSEY CITY - A U.S. Army soldier from Jersey City was killed in action in Afghanistan last week, officials say. Pfc. Leroy Deronde III, 22, was killed on May 27, according to the Department of Defense. Another second soldier who was from Denver was also killed by enemy forces in the attack. Officials say both soldiers were assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 5th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division stationed at Fort Bliss in Texas. The soldier's sister, Jennifer, says they had recently lost their mother to cancer. She says she's devastated by the news of her brother, whom she says was living out his dreams by serving the country.The family has not yet finalized plans for memorial services.
