FAIRFIELD - Officials say a report of missing boaters on the Passaic River was likely a hoax.

The Staten Island Coast Guard received a radio distress call around 9:45 last night.

Three boaters were reported missing after their boat allegedly became disabled and started sinking.

Searches of the area on the water and from the air turned up nothing.

Officials say the river in that area is extremely shallow.

There were no other reports of missing people or signs of a boat trailer.
