WOODLAND PARK - Officials say that a veteran detective with the Passaic County Prosecutor's Office shot and killed himself in his home.

Woodland Park police and the county SWAT team responded to Detective Sergio Mella's home on Tuesday night. Officials unsuccessfully negotiated with Mella, who has been with the prosecutor's office since 2007.

Police entered the home and found Mella had shot himself with his service weapon. No one else was inside the home at the time of the shooting.

No one else was present or injured. The medical examiner is investigating.

His death comes after a Sayreville police detective shot and killed himself in March.

The Associated Press wire services contributed to this report.
