Officials: Newark police officer shoots gun-wielding man, Willie Brooks

NEWARK - A Newark police officer shot a man who pulled out a gun and refused to put it down, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office says.

The incident occurred on North Fourth Street and Dickerson Street at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

Authorities say the officer approached a group of men when Willie Brooks, 22, pulled out a gun and turned it toward the officer, prompting him to fire.

Brooks was taken to University Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

He has been charged with several weapons offenses.
