ELIZABETH - Officials confirm that a Jersey City police officer was shot in Elizabeth tonight. The officer was assisting the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force when it happened, officials say.

The team was attempting to bring in a female fugitive from Jersey City when a gun went off during the arrest. The officer was accidentally shot in the stomach, according to officials, although it remains unclear who fired the weapon.

The wounded officer was taken to UMDNJ. The officer's condition is unknown at this time.
