BELLEVILLE - Officials are working to determine the cause of a billowing fire that sparked in a Belleville apartment building Friday night.

Fire Chief Martin Lutz says a call came in at around 8 p.m. to report the fire at a three-story, 10-family apartment building located at 472 Washington Ave. He says the multiple-alarm fire started in the basement and quickly spread to the first floor and made its way up to the roof.

After approximately 90 minutes, the fire was under control. Crews were on the scene Saturday to put out lingering hot spots.

Belleville's fire chief would not speculate on what caused the fire. Arson detectives are working to determine what may have sparked the blaze.

No injuries were reported.

A tattoo parlor on the first floor of the building was destroyed during the incident. The artists say they will be working at their other location in Rochelle Park at Starlight Tattoo.

The Red Cross was present to assist those displaced and has set up a shelter nearby.

March has seen plenty of fires across the state, including in Linden, Paterson and Edison, where James Monroe Elementary School burned to the ground. Last week, four people died in a Point Pleasant Beach motel fire, which was sparked by an errant cigarette.
