PEQUANNOCK - Officials in Northern New Jersey are taking steps before Hurricane Irene makes landfall to help alleviate flooding.

Tuesday, Pequannock Township Manager David Hollberg made a request to Gov. Chris Christie's office to open the flood gates ahead of the storm. The goal is to lower lake and reservoir levels beforehand in hope of minimizing the impact of the hurricane.

Christie says he's weighing the decision. At a news conference today, he said he wants a status report about the Pequannock flood gates before making any decisions.

The governor also asked the Department of Environmental Protection to give him a status report on the Pequannock flood gates by Friday.
