WASHINGTON - (AP) - Al-Qaida considered attacking U.S. trains onthe upcoming anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, butcounterterrorism officials say they believe the planning never gotbeyond the initial phase.

The officials say they have no recent intelligence pointing toan active plot for such an attack.

Information on the train plot appears to be the first widelycirculated intelligence pulled from the raid this week on binLaden's secret compound in Pakistan. A U.S official says otherintelligence information gathered at the compound represented aterrorist wish list, but has revealed no specific plan so far.

He said documents indicated a desire to hit the U.S. withlarge-scale attacks in major cities and on key dates such asanniversaries and holidays. But there was no sign those plans wereanything more than ambitions. The U.S. official spoke on conditionof anonymity to discuss intelligence matters.

Regarding the train plot, the FBI and Homeland Security toldlocal officials to be on the lookout for clips or spikes missingfrom train tracks, packages left on or near the tracks and otherindications that a train could be vulnerable.
