NEWARK - Fire officials say five people have died after a fast-moving fire swept through several buildings in Newark early this morning.

Authorities report that an adult man, a teenage boy, and a 6-year-old girl died in the front unit of 33 Brookdale Ave. A 3-year-old girl and 4-year-old boy in the rear apartment also perished in the blaze.

Newark fire officials say the fire started at the vacant three-story house at 31 Brookdale Ave., but it quickly spread to the occupied multi-family homes on either side.

Residents in neighboring homes say they had little warning and scrambled to get out.

City officials say the vacant home is one of thousands in Newark, a constant reminder of hard times and an ever-present danger to the surrounding neighborhoods.
