PISCATAWAY - A police officer and a suspect are recovering from minor injuries after they were involved in a police pursuit that ended inside a cemetery.

According to the Middlesex County prosecutor, the incident began Wednesday morning when the suspect reportedly ran a red light in New Brunswick. A Rutgers University police officer tried to stop the driver, but the driver took off.

The Piscataway officer spotted the driver’s 2002 Honda Accord near Hoes Lane. The suspect reportedly did not pull over and turned into the Resurrection Cemetery.

The driver allegedly circled a number of headstones before his car became stuck in the mud.

Police say that the officer was struck during the incident in the cemetery and he fired a shot at the suspect. The officer suffered minor injuries.

The suspect was not shot, but was taken into custody “with the use of a conducted energy device,” according to police.

The New Jersey Office of the Attorney General was notified about the incident, which is in accordance with the state’s use-of-force guidelines.

Both men were treated and released from the hospital.

Charges have yet to be filed against the driver.
