Officials say a suspect wielding a machete was shot multiple times by police in New Jersey.

Police shot and arrested a man in Clark along Lake Avenue Tuesday night after he allegedly threatened a police officer with a machete.

CLARK - Officials say a suspect wielding a machete was shot multiple times by police in New Jersey.

Mayor Sal Bonaccorso says the suspect had threatened a woman with the machete outside an apartment Tuesday night in Clark. The relationship between the suspect and the woman wasn't immediately clear.

Bonaccorso says the suspect then went after three bystanders who tried to help her.

Authorities say responding police officers shot the suspect after he lunged at them with the machete.

Bonaccorso says the suspect was taken to a hospital. His condition wasn't immediately known. It's unclear how many times he was shot or where he was hit.

Officials haven't released the suspect's name.

No officers were hurt.
