NUTLEY - Authorities in Nutley say they have three men in custody following the carjacking of an off-duty Newark police officer last night.

Nutley police say two men robbed the officer at gunpoint at around 9:40 p.m. in front of his home on Columbia Avenue. They fled the scene with the officer's cell phone, money and his 2006 Cadillac wagon, according to police.

The officer told police he had a variety of police-related equipment in his vehicle, including his uniforms, a bullet-proof vest, a police radio and hollow-point bullets.

Members of the Essex County Carjacking Task Force, who just this week touted the arrest of dozens of carjacking suspects, spotted the stolen car in East Orange less than 24 hours later and arrested the three men inside.

Officials say the men in the car have been charged with receiving stolen property, but more charges will follow if evidence links them to the carjacking.

The neighborhood is described as quiet and is home to a number of police officers.
