ELIZABETH - An off-duty Linden police officer was beaten by a large group of teens in a normally quiet Elizabeth neighborhood Thursday night.

Sgt. Chris Guenther and a relative tried to break up a fight on a street corner, prompting a large crowd to turn on them. Four juvenile boys and a 19-year-old man were arrested in the incident.

Witnesses say some of the youths involved in the assault ran to a nearby park, where they were eventually caught by police.

Guenther and his relative suffered non-life threatening injuries. Elizabeth police say they are still investigating the incident.
