SEASIDE HEIGHTS - Although lifeguards are not yet officially on-duty, they were around to make two water rescues within 30 minutes of each other in Seaside Heights on Wednesday.

According to Seaside Heights Police Capt. Rob Connor, in both cases, lifeguards were not on-duty but were nearby when the swimmers became distressed.

The first incident happened around 2:45 p.m., where a 21-year-old man was rescued after getting caught in a rip current off Franklin Avenue Beach.

The man was dragged out about 300 yards before he was rescued.

Police say he was not hurt and did not require medical attention.

The second incident involved a 12-year-old and a 13-year-old around 3:15 p.m.  Police say the pair was swimming off Sumner Avenue when they slipped off a sandbar.

They were also rescued and did not require medical attention.

Although lifeguards were in the area preparing for Memorial Day weekend, they are not on-duty at the beaches until Friday.

Despite the warm weather, officials say the water is still very cold, making rescues extremely difficult.

"It's so dangerous this time of the year without lifeguards on-duty. You really don't want to be going in the water," says Connor.
