Off-duty corrections officer among 3 killed in Newark

NEWARK - Officials say an off-duty corrections officer is among three people who were killed in four separate shootings early this morning in Newark.

The Essex County Prosecutor's Office says 37-year-old Katrina Owens was at a barbecue on Columbia Avenue when she was involved in a dispute. Acting Newark Police Director Samuel DeMaio said Owens was shot by a man with whom she was in a relationship.

Allen Barron, 21, of Newark, fled to Virginia where federal authorities say he shot and killed himself at a Richmond bus terminal just as agents were about to apprehend him.

Owens was a married mother of three from Monmouth Junction who had worked for the state Corrections Department since 2003.

There were three other unrelated shootings that happened during the same hour that left two other people dead. Police believe both of those shootings were drug-related.
